Emma Hamza Grünwald is an audiovisual artist / designer, composer & musician, photographer and mentor based in Kyiv, Ukraine (born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1994).
Emma composes experimental music under the alias "äsc3ea" and creates visuals, combining such media as generative art, AI, design, video, and photography. She creates works analyzing and reflecting on topics in the field of psychological science and neurobiology such as mental health, cognitive dissonance, and sleeping disorders.Following the commencement of the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Emma's focus shifted towards the topics of war traumas and mental health in times of conflict, as well as decolonization and the exploration of redefining cultural and ethnic identity. While creating music she is searching for some warm analog sound, which takes you back to childhood, and creates a naïve comfort sensation. At the same time, she mixes it with the glitchy, warped, detuned, distorted sound that tends to confuse you and creates some dissonance. The aim is to uncover the contrast between the comforting sensation of naïve childhood memories and the glitchy, distorted, out-of-tune, messed up, dissonance reality that we experience nowadays. As an experimental musician, she finds that traditional genre labels can be limiting when it comes to expressing herself through her sound. Instead, she prefers to explore a range of moods and rhythms in her music, seeking to capture the emotional landscape of the world around her.Emma is experimenting with a variety of musical styles and techniques. She might create dark ambient pieces with haunting melodies and a warm, lo-fi sound, then layer on top of it marching drum beats to create a sense of tension and unease. Or she might blend glitchy, distorted techno rhythms with calming eastern soundscapes. For more playful tracks, she might turn to breakbeats to get bodies moving and unwind. Her sound is all about experimentation and playfulness, with intricate rhythms and playful melodies that keep listeners engaged and energized.Emma spent her entire life in cities characterized by contrasts, where the cultures of the East and West coexist side by send and blend. This exposure to a diverse environment has provided her with an authentic, distinctive, and unique experience, which has influenced her approach to creating music and motivated her to merge seemingly incompatible elements in her compositions. Emma is a resident of Module Exchange, Carbon formation, Photinus Studio, and a part of _mediaklub group since 2020; founder of [GSMKW: Gesamtkunstwerk], [ˈʃpiːlʁaʊ̯m] & Visual escapism. Some cover artworks for her releases feature visuals from Emma's "Visual Escapism" project, which she initiated in 2018. The project involves taking grainy, blurry night visuals that capture the atmosphere of the moment. [GSMKW: Gesamtkunstwerk] is another project has started in 2020, where Emma experiments with audio, visual and design solutions.[ˈʃpiːlʁaʊ̯m] is an experimental audiovisual design educational playground with mentoring sessions.
