I must confess one thing. It is already one year that I stopped playing online chess. It would typically be a 3-minute bullet match while listening to a DJ music. It was fast multiplied by faster. I enjoyed pauses between online sessions until enjoyed them no more.
Chess teaches you two main things. First lesson is learned when you start playing it. You learn about focus, strategy, emotions, attacka and defence. Second lesson is much harder. In order to learn it you must stop playing chess at all.
There is a line. A line which shows your rating. I spent almost 3 years to reach 1950 rating in online format in 3-minute matches. But after that every attempt to get to 2000+ would fail. Because I needed to slow down and go to deep theory and game analysis. But soon I realized that I was trying to win by the mere dominance of speed. It was brutal mistake and it took time to understand it.
A year of not playing changed me. Sometime I play physical matches with my friends but it is not the same as going wild while listening to music.
Why I am sharing it? Because, it is hard to stop doing things that damage you. Eventually, our ego manipulates us into complete conformity if we let it.
Ego wants another match, another fight for that win. But reality shows you that without theory you are simply a fly bumping into a window. 1000 times of bumping will only shape your head.
Simple lesson that I learned which was not that simple to let go.
It is called addiction.
As George Bernard Shaw would say it, quiting smoking is easy, I quit 1000 times.
So, I must say quitting is hard but 360+ days passed. So, it is possible.
I share this photo as a found memore of times when I would find time to wait for the worldclass machines showing how they operating on a 2700+ level - 3300+ online.
